Planning a Trip to Baler? Here’s What You Need to Know!

January 7, 2020 by Ray L 1 Comment

planning a trip to baler one adventurer

Ah, Baler. It’s one of those amazing destinations I didn’t think I’d ever travel to and so I didn’t think about it much, so it’s a great thing my cousin decided to hold his wedding there and we were finally able to see it.

Before I was ever a hiker, my primary outdoor adventures involve beaches and snorkeling. Now how did I get into surfing even though I don’t know how to swim that well (or at all)? Back in college I joined, and later organized, week-long trips to the northern provinces of Luzon, and one of our final stops was a famous surfing spot in San Juan, La Union. The waters were shallow, the waves were calm, and there are instructors you can hire to teach you. Perfect for beginners… just like Sabang beach of Baler!

Aside from La Union, I heard of other very famous surfing spots in the Philippines like Siargao, Baler, and Surigao, but I’ve always thought they were too far from Manila so I dismissed them from my mind. If I ever wanted to surf again, I’d just go to San Juan, La Union from October to January. It was a great stroke of luck that our family was invited to my distant cousin’s wedding in Sabang, Baler, and I got to experience firsthand how nice the waves are there.

Have you ever wondered what Baler’s Sabang beach is like? Here’s what I’ve experienced!

Buying Souvenirs in Amulet Market Thailand

Buying Souvenirs in Amulet Market Thailand

Magic talismans and good luck charms have been part of human culture since time immemorial. In Japan there are omamori charms, nazar boncuğu in Turkey and Greece, and anting-anting in the Philippines. In Thailand, Buddhist monks pray to amulets to give wearers different kinds of blessings.

Personally, if I’m going to travel abroad, I’d want something other than those crappy souvenir shirts that I’m never going to wear. I’d either buy something I can use like the phin coffee filter I got in Vietnam, or I’d get a trinket or piece of jewelry. When I found out that amulets are an important part of Thai culture, I decided to get one for myself!

Here’s how you can have an amulet as a souvenir from the Amulet Market, and how you can own some REAL “blessed by monks” Thai amulets.

Want to Save Money Traveling Abroad? Avoid This Mistake!

Save Money Traveling Abroad one adventurer

I read that when traveling abroad, you should shop around when you’re trying to exchange your currency for the local one. I had no idea how important that tip was until it almost ruined our multi-country trip.

When we traveled to Vietnam and Thailand last March 2019, we made sure to prepare a good amount of cash for the trip. We made sure we have more than enough for food and transportation, tourist attractions, and souvenirs. The hotels and guided tours were all paid in advance. On the last third of our trip, however, we were quite surprised when we realized that we somehow spent most of our travel fund and we needed to cut back on all expenses.

It was really odd as we weren’t splurging at all. We didn’t do a lot of shopping and the cost of meals and transportation in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok were very similar to Manila. We budgeted for it all, so what happened?

  • Did our cash get stolen? No. We were extra careful and we always checked.
  • Was it the food? No. The meals we had weren’t that expensive.
  • Was it the tourist attractions? No. We actually budgeted for all of those.
  • Was it the taxis? No. They cost the same and we didn’t use them that often.
  • Was it the souvenirs? No. We didn’t do a lot of shopping.

So what drained our travel funds?
